What is the role of an umpire?

The umpire has the authority over a particular match and is in charge of the court and its immediate surrounds. The umpire ensures the match is conducted in accordance with the Laws of Badminton and other applicable regulations. The umpire makes calls regarding faults or lets, and keeps the match score which they announce after each point. The umpire also needs to be fully aware of everything happening on the court and in its immediate surroundings, making sure that the match is conducted fairly and correctly. The umpire works with appointed line judges, acknowledging their line calls and maintaining regular eye contact. The umpire can also be appointed as a service judge in the match, with the responsibility for calling service faults and working as a team with the match umpire.. 

The course

Badminton Hobart is hosting a National Accredited Umpire Course – Level 1. The course is free to attend and will be presented by David Turner, a highly experienced BWF umpire and assessor.

Participants will receive face-to-face training, including rules, on-court procedures, and a practical assessment. Successful participants will receive official accreditation upon completion of all components of the course.

Course Dates:
Saturday 21st February – 9:30am to 5:00pm – training
Sunday 22nd February – 9:30am to 12:00pm – written exam
