Badminton HobartUncategorizedFrom the President: our move to Badminton Hobart

March 31, 20250

Since introducing our new name, Badminton Hobart, we’ve been delighted to receive so much positive feedback from many of you. At the same time, we understand that some members aren’t fully on board yet, and we recognise that moving away from the Southern Tasmanian Badminton Association (STBA) may feel like a significant change. We’d like to take a moment to explain how this came about, why it matters, and what it means for our club’s future.

Our journey to Badminton Hobart started in 2023 with a strategic planning session alongside Sport Surge, a Tasmanian sports management group. This wasn’t an open forum but a targeted effort by our committee to define the club’s future direction. To ensure a wide range of views, we sought input from staff, past committee members, coaches, players, volunteers, and life members. From there, we collaborated with Gloo Advertising, a local marketing agency, to refine our identity. Through this thorough process, Badminton Hobart was established as our new name and brand. We shared the change and rollout plans around the time of the 2024 AGM, though we recognise not all members could participate in those discussions.

At the same time, the association faced significant staffing changes, which shifted our focus. Considerable effort went into keeping the centre running smoothly and supporting our new General Manager as he settled into his role. As a result, communication with our broader community paused during this period, and looking back, we see that earlier and more consistent updates from that point would have been valuable. Moving forward, we’re committed to keeping you informed with regular updates on the work we’re doing.

Why make the change? Firstly, it’s about clarity and identity. The STBA name, while rich with history, often felt like a regional umbrella rather than a distinct club. Badminton Hobart focuses on what we do (badminton) and where we’re based (Hobart), creating a stronger, more unified brand. Local examples like Clarence Football Club, Hobart Walkers Club, or Hobart Hurricanes show how a clear name can connect to a central base while serving a broader area.

Secondly, it reflects our community’s scale. According to the ABS 2021 Census, Greater Hobart includes over 247,000 people—nearly half of Tasmania’s population. “Hobart” isn’t just a city label; it represents a substantial regional presence. We chose a simple, two-word name for its brevity and impact.

Finally, the STBA hasn’t disappeared—it remains a trading entity under our Constitution. We’re as dedicated as ever to welcoming players from across southern Tasmania, the state, and beyond under both names. This rebrand isn’t about exclusion; it’s about building a vibrant, recognisable identity that reflects our purpose and passion.

We’re excited to develop Badminton Hobart into a brand we can all embrace—one that stands for great games, a strong community, and a club we’re proud to represent. Whether you’re playing at the Harry Thompson Badminton Centre or joining events across the state, these changes lay the foundation for a brighter, more connected future. Playing shirts and drink bottles, anyone?
